Birmingham Introduce Flights to Amritsar PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 March 2009 18:56

Birmingham International Airport has made a deal that will see a flight path to Amritsar this year. The deal involves airline Akal Air which will fly to the Indian city, Amritsar, using Boeings 757 twice a week. The service is to be launched from the 4th April 2009.

Akal Air will be flying twice a week from the West Midlands airport at 18:30 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Boeing 757 will be able to carry 228 passengers to Amritsar each way.

The new route is great news for the large local Asian community. ‘Birmingham is the perfect base for Akal Air, access to Amritsar is a huge importance for the large Punjabi and Sikh population in the West Midlands.’ Says Daljit Singh Birring, the Managing Director of Akal Air.

Private investors behind Akal Air feel that there is a gap in the market and are looking to take advantage of it. This comes after news from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicts a global loss of $4.7 billion this year for airliners.

Please Take Off the £170 Flight Tax PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 22 March 2009 15:55

Travel agents, tour operators and airline bosses are urging Labour to abolish the flight tax, this is so that families that are being hit by the recession can pay for flights and holidays without the extra cost of extra taxes.

Labour’s idea is to hike up air passenger duty to up to £170 on some long haul flights, but travel chiefs are saying that no-one can afford the extra taxes. The recession has hit the travel industry and this new taxes will be another blow to the industry.

One of the hardest hit destinations are the Caribbean, over 750,000 Brits visit this beautiful destination every year. The current passenger duty is £40 but will rise to £60 in November, then a year later rise to £75. From November 1st anyone flying in anything above economy class, so first, business or premium economy will have to pay a massive duty of around £150 each flight to the Caribbean.

To travel to Peru, Australia or New Zealand in non-economy class, the duty would be a full £170. Travel experts have said that the new duty fees are to discriminate passengers flying to certain destinations, they back up this claim by stating that to travel to anywhere in the United States, which is over 5,300 miles, will only cost £45 in duty fees. However to travel to the Caribbean, which is less then 4,300 miles, will cost passengers £60 duty fee.

The new system is supposed to help reduce carbon emissions, and passengers taking longer flights should be subjected to a greater duty fee then shorted flights. But this is not the case, instead some destinations that are further away have less fees added on then closer ones. This undermines the whole concept of the system, and the travel industry want it abolished.
